Connecting with my “Hippy” Side and What I’m Learning in the Process

I’ve spoken briefly before on Like a Bird about the fact that I am pagan. I don’t know how many actually know what that means but I do know a lot of the stereotypes bring up images of a “hippy”, and I think I’m okay with that.

I have identified as pagan since before I knew what it was. That’s probably a story for another time, however.
Today, I wanted to talk about how I’m connecting with my pagan and “hippy” side.

I’ve always been a rune lover, my set is made of Jade and I couldn’t love it more. I never thought I would get in to tarot but recently I have. The best thing I’ve experienced from working with my new deck? Peace.

Yes that’s right. The girl who can’t meditate or calm down from a panic attack, has learned that by doing a few personal readings, focusing on what the spirits choose to show me, calms me down. There have been several instances the last few weeks that I’ve been on the verge of breaking down for one reason or another.

So I’ve pulled out my deck (while the fiance watches the baby), sat on the floor, shuffled and re-shuffled and drew what I needed to read. It is becoming a new (inconsistent) habit and I’m loving it.

Ya know what I love more than runes or the tarot? Crystals and gems. Oh yes.

The beauty of nature and energy all wrapped up together.

We’ve recently found 2 local metaphysical stores (after searching for a looong time) and one weekend I was having pretty bad anxiety. So we called one of the stores and asked if they had any lepidolite. They did. So we made the trip and spent a bunch of money on stones to calm my stress, stones to help Jeffrey (and all of us) sleep better and stones to help cleanse our living space and release negative energy.

It’s a slow process. Getting back in touch with my “hippy”, pagan, spiritual side but it’s peaceful and exciting. We have many plans in the next few months to pursue this further and I’ll check back and let you all know how this is helping my mental illnesses and my new career path.

How do you connect with your “hippy” side?

I love learning being a hippy. I’m only now realizing how natural and simple I’d like my life to be. I am slowly switching to all natural products, want to start eating non-processed foods. I am coming to have more faith in alternative medicines such as naturopathy and osteopathy when it comes to systemic whole body issues. With my baby, I breastfeed and cloth diaper and baby-wear. I am trying to take some time each day to listen to my inner voice and reflect.

Oh yes yes yes! I love being Pagan and I love my hippy side as well. :) I do a personal tarot card every morning as often as I can. My newest obsession is buying a rune set. I love studying the Sabbats, writing in my grimoire, doing my New Age Wednesday blog series and so much more – especially following like-minded ladies like you, lovely lady!

    Hi,
I found your blog just today. It’s so calming and sweet to look at. I could definitely relate to your issues with panic attacks, being a sufferer myself. I wish you much health and happiness. And by the way what is a pagan? Didn’t actually understand what one is. Can you tell me?

    Thank you!
