Connecting with my “Hippy” Side and What I’m Learning in the Process

I’ve spoken briefly before on Like a Bird about the fact that I am pagan. I don’t know how many actually know what that means but I do know a lot of the stereotypes bring up images of a “hippy”, and I think I’m okay with that.

I have identified as pagan since before I knew what it was. That’s probably a story for another time, however.
Today, I wanted to talk about how I’m connecting with my pagan and “hippy” side.

I’ve always been a rune lover, my set is made of Jade and I couldn’t love it more. I never thought I would get in to tarot but recently I have. The best thing I’ve experienced from working with my new deck? Peace.

Yes that’s right. The girl who can’t meditate or calm down from a panic attack, has learned that by doing a few personal readings, focusing on what the spirits choose to show me, calms me down. There have been several instances the last few weeks that I’ve been on the verge of breaking down for one reason or another.

So I’ve pulled out my deck (while the fiance watches the baby), sat on the floor, shuffled and re-shuffled and drew what I needed to read. It is becoming a new (inconsistent) habit and I’m loving it.

Ya know what I love more than runes or the tarot? Crystals and gems. Oh yes.

The beauty of nature and energy all wrapped up together.

We’ve recently found 2 local metaphysical stores (after searching for a looong time) and one weekend I was having pretty bad anxiety. So we called one of the stores and asked if they had any lepidolite. They did. So we made the trip and spent a bunch of money on stones to calm my stress, stones to help Jeffrey (and all of us) sleep better and stones to help cleanse our living space and release negative energy.

It’s a slow process. Getting back in touch with my “hippy”, pagan, spiritual side but it’s peaceful and exciting. We have many plans in the next few months to pursue this further and I’ll check back and let you all know how this is helping my mental illnesses and my new career path.

How do you connect with your “hippy” side?
