2014 Word of the Year: Present

2014 Word of the Year: Present

Just as I did for my word(s) for 2013, I did a tarot reading this year to pick what I want to focus on in 2014.

The week before Yule, I had come up with a list of about 4 or 5 words that kind of spoke to me but I wasn’t super confident about any of them right away. I needed more insight, more thought and just more time to figure out what I need to work on for the coming year.

On Yule, (okay, the day after because I forgot) I shuffled my deck and drew 1 card: The Ace of Cups/Chalices. The Cups/Chalice suit is very much about emotions and feelings. The deck I have has 2 sides to it and I drew the card upside down and reversed (so it was the black and white side, and upside down). There are obviously a lot of ways to interpret tarot cards and even different meanings based on the orientation of the card.

My word for 2014: Present

This is something I’ve already been trying to focus on the past month or so. It was a word that I wrote down when I started to brainstorm words and the correlation that came up in my tarot deck just solidified that this is really where I need to go next in my life.

My mental health is getting a lot better and my anxiety and depression are (for the most part) under control enough and I’m ready to go to the next level. I’ve been saying for a few months that I’m not sure what the next level is or how to get there but now I know. This is it.

Here are a few personal mantras I’ve crafted while thinking about “present”.

“Have Perspective.”

“Learn to Live With Your Thoughts.”

“Practice Mindfulness.”

“Focus Outward.”

These mantras and thoughts will be guiding words for my through the coming year as I navigate trying to be more in the moment. I plan to write more soon about each of the mantras and how I am/will focus and work through these ideas.

Honestly? I’m a little scared of my word. But I think that’s okay. People pick words for different reasons, but I think for me I view it as a challenge. I think the word I pick to focus on each year should be something that will move my life forward, make me a better person and help me figure out what I need and want out of my life. I know this is going to be hard to focus on because being present and mindful is a big sticking point for me right now, but I know it’s important.
