Walking for Mental Health Awareness

If you couldn’t tell by all the topics on my blog and all of the things I offer, I feel very passionate about Mental Health.

I think it’s important for us to discuss it, to be okay with it, to realize it doesn’t make you ‘crazy’ to have a mental illness. I think the healthcare for mental illnesses is lacking in the United States and so any foundation that provides resources and raises money to help those in need is a-ok in my book!

NAMI is the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness. NAMI advocates for access to services, treatment, supports and research and is steadfast in its commitment to raise awareness and build a community for hope for all of those in need.

Nami Walks

On October 5th, 2013 my little family of 3 is going to be doing the 5K walk for the Cook County NAMI and we are so excited! I’ve never done a 5K or a walk for charity before and I am greatful that NAMI started these walks because it is a fantastic cause and just the thing I want to support.

Will you help support Mental Health Awareness and help me reach my fundraising goal? You can help support me by making a secure online donation using your credit card.

That Time I Took a Pole Dancing Class

That Time I Took a Pole Dancing Class

This has been something I always thought about but never actually thought I would do. “Oh that sounds like so much fun!” is what you always say to your girlfriends about pole dancing classes, right? Me too.

Except in July, I did it.

I signed up for a private pole dancing class and I loved it! I’m going back to take more classes for sure but I wanted to write out some things today about doing the class.

Last year I wrote about body acceptance but since then I’ve stopped breastfeeding, and one of the (negative) coping mechanisms I’ve used for my depression and anxiety has been eating comfort food for almost every meal. No I don’t hate my body, but I’ve gained some weight and I’m not pleased with my health. So I was nervous to do something that is mostly advertised for “skinny” girls, which is part of why I did a private lesson and not a class with other women, yet.

And oh what fun I had! The instructor was so nice and I didn’t feel awkward and despite the fact that I have horrible anxiety around strangers, I did really well and didn’t feel that anxious at all.
My instructor made me feel comfortable, told me there is no difference in learning moves for someone who is overweight. She showed me how to do the sexy moves and encouraged me.

She told me I was in tune well with my body and my movements weren’t jerky like a lot of first-timers. I manged to do a spin! I did so well she showed me an even harder one they don’t usually show in a first class. I couldn’t do the second spin but I’m so proud of myself and felt so awesome coming home. I kept bragging to my husband about how well I did and all the moves I could do.

It was a workout! And I really want to go back because I felt sexy and I had fun. For once in my life I did something that was a workout and while I was doing it, I didn’t hate my life (you know that feeling, don’t you ladies?!).

Not only did I do something that sounded scary, but I did it well and I took time for self care. How great is that?! Yes I came away tired, I could barely lift my arms for a few days and I had the biggest bruise of my life on my leg. But I’m going back.

Update: Since I wrote this post a few days after my first lesson, I’ve since contacted the studio again and have signed up for 10 weeks of private lessons!! I will post more about this if I feel the need to, otherwise wise me luck.
